The design of this bilingual children's book makes it an alphabet book that will get read and re-read many times over. Dr. Gonzalez Perez centers a precise photograph of a Mexican dish in the middle of 25 pages plus a picture glossary of Mexican cooking utensils. Descriptive text in Spanish is on top of the page, with the English translation on the bottom of the page. Each paragraph of text ends with a question for the reader or listener, such as "What is your favorite enchilada?" or "With what meals is guacamole served?" or "What other ojarasca shapes have you seen?" This book informs readers of any age about the great variety of Mexican food. it is culturally empowering and authored by a professor of education. This book will also make you hungry. Strongly recommended for libraries, schools, homes, and community centers.

Dr. Ma. Alma González Pérez has authentically captured the Southernmost Texas/Mexico border area's food culture and what these dishes mean to the bilingual people living there. This gem of an alphabet book is a great introduction to real Mexican food while bilingually teaching both the alphabet and some important vocabulary. But the real magic of the book lies in the simple way it conveys the food's delicious nourishment and its deeper significance. As a life-long member of this community, I can vouche to this book's genius and authenticity. The youngest members of my border community are introduced to their culture through food while both languages are spoken at the table of sharing. They then grow to deeply love these wonderful foods and the hands that prepare these dishes. Love also binds all those sharing these meals together. Strangers that visit these border communities quickly are seen as friends through the caring insistence of a cultural meal shared no matter what the language. This wonderful book brings back my personal nostalgia and pride of my bilingual border culture. This book is a must have if you want to learn or to teach the Hispanic culture and its language, or if you simply want to have an Hispanic treasure in your hands!

This book is precious! I bought this for my daughter. My in laws own a Mexican restaurant, and speak only Spanish. It's a great way for her to learn about food, culture, and the family business, as well as Spanish words.

The photos are vivid and well done but the text sections are long and poorly written.I was hoping to use this book with K-2s and ELLs but I don't think it will be appropriate.Disappointing!

5 Platypires for Todas a Comer! A Mexican Alphabet Book by Ma Alma Gonzalez Perez.I read this book with my 7-year-old nephew and he gave it 5 Platypires. He said he enjoyed this book and liked that it was in English and in Spanish. He liked learning about all the different foods from Mexico some of which he has eaten. He said he plans on reading this book to his younger brothers so they can learn as well.Personally, I thought it was fun to read the book in both languages. I also enjoyed learning about all the different foods. I liked how the pictures were all colorful and when we stumbled over a word we could find the translation pretty easily.Overall, I would recommend this book to those who are in a bilingual home.

This book is awesome for both bilingual and monolingual children who want to learn more about the Hispanic culture. The illustrations are beautiful and the language is engaging and kid-friendly. Each page teaches about a different type of food and then asks a question to engage the children in conversation. Would be the perfect addition to a classroom or at-home library.
