Pagola has a simple message to convey. God must be understood as compassion, not power. In his book he set out to depict, in clear, accessible layman s language, as much as the historical sources allow, a comprehensive picture of Jesus of Nazareth. Just who was he? What was his contemporary world really like? Why did he want to go beyond complex religious codes and ritual practices? And why did he end up on collision course with the local Jewish authorities and the delegates of imperial Rome? --Mark Dowd, The Tablet, UK. This volume aims to approximate Jesus with historical rigor and in simple language, in order to bring his person and message closer to people today. --New Testament Abstracts. One of Pagola s most controversial stances is that Jesus never described his death in theological terms and did not understand it as a sacrificial atonement for the sins of humanity. The Father doesn t need to preserve his honor with anyone s destruction, Pagola writes. His love for his sons and daughters is gratuitous, his forgiveness unconditional. Rather, Pagola says, Jesus viewed his death as a service to God s reign for the benefit of all. Jesus: An Historical Approximation may frustrate conservatives, who fault Pagola for departing from traditional formulas of faith, as well as liberals, who wonder how a follower of Jesus can analyze the historical sources objectively. --Mark Dowd, The Tablet, UKOne of Pagolas most controversial stances is that Jesus never described his death in theological terms and did not understand it as a sacrificial atonement for the sins of humanity. ERIC HOFFER BOOK AWARD – FINALIST"This is an extraordinary work of scholarship. Beautifully written, it is also an expression of the author's profound faith commitment... the author nevertheless presents a compelling 'approximation of that life'. In so doing, Pagola has written a highly readable book that deserves a wide readership in the Church and the academy." - Roberto Goizueta, Boston College, Former President of the Catholic Theological Society of America."One of Pagola's most controversial stances is that Jesus never described his death in theological terms and did not understand it as a sacrificial atonement for the sins of humanity. Thomas Strieter, Ph.D., retired Lutheran pastor and professor, Chicago, IL."This volume aims to approximate Jesus with historical rigor and in simple language, in order to bring his person and message closer to people today." - New Testament Abstracts"Pagola has a simple message to convey. This is the most complete book on the life of Jesus that I have ever read. It includes all the well known theologians, historians, and authors of the studies done on Jesus. Why the author wrote this book is to show the readers what appears to be the reasons Jesus came on earth. In the author's words: "I want to help readers discern some of the first steps taken . . . to deepen the mystery that lies within Jesus." This will help people to realize the real Jesus and his real message of good news to the world and how to realize it in the way Jesus wished they would. Not easy reading but rewarding and a wonderful and freeing look at a major figure in the world we live in.

The book arrived on time. Thus is a special, enriching and thought changing book in a very good way. It helps one to understand cultures and the culture of Jesus' time in history. It enriches ones daily life, reading, reflection and opinions - a truly great book that would be enriching for any reader.

This book is arguably the best writing about Jesus, in the author's own terms, an historical approximation, by a true scripture scholar that I have read to date. The author takes the accepted historical data about Jesus and fills in the blanks from the New Testament sources to give a spiritually charged account of the life of Jesus. You can read the book from various angles, such as the biblical, social and economic environment in which Jesus lived and carried out his prophetic mission, or, you can garner spiritual nourishment as the author interprets Jesus words and action to describe Jesus' unspoken and unwritten experience with his heavenly Father, or, finally you can compare his insights to enrich New Testament writings officially accepted by the Church.

An engaging, well-researched and fascinating book. I am really enjoying it. My only critique would be that the introduction might benefit from a detailed explanation/defense of the historical reliability of the gospels. Pagola notes early on that he will use the gospels as his main (but not only) source of information regarding Jesus himself. Some people may question the authenticity/reliability of these works without having knowledge of the strong evidence in their favor.Interesting info on the subject for those who are interested:http://www.bethinking.org/is-the-bible-reliable/recent-perspectives-on-the-reliability-of-the-gospels

I read this book for a class in my divinity school and found it to be the best book on the historical Jesus I've ever read. Unlike other books on the subject it's also very approachable to anyone, not only people who are studying this at a graduate level. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about the man Jesus and the time in which he lived.

As a pastor I have read many books on the history of Jesus and the historical setting. With non scholarly language the author allows you to understand Jesus's world more as he lived it and perceived it than any "historical" presentation I have read. It is more like a living history and gives great insight on the world of Jesus behind the parables. Very much like the contributions of Kenneth Bailey.

Probably the best book I've read about the life of Jesus and how he wants his followers to care for the poor and downtrodden. Well-written in an easy reading style. The footnotes alone are worth reading. Extensively researched.

I have been teaching the Bible since 1954, and I am still giving lectures on the Scriptures. I have read José Pagola's book, and I must say it is the best book I have ever read on Jesus.Pagola's approach is not 'theological', but 'historical'. His aim is to tell us in what sort of world Jesus was born and lived. And as we read on, we are touched by how close to us, human beings, Jesus was. I must add that Pagola's book is very readable, and the many friends who have bought and read it are unanimous in saying that reading it was a wonderful experience and helped them in their faith.
